    LANSING, Mich. (WZMQ) – Michigan lawmakers are looking to secure funding for local law enforcement and public safety. The House Government Operations Committee approved bills Thursday morning that would create a Public Safety and Violence Prevention Trust Fund. The two bills in Michigan’s House of Representatives could bring $75 million to police departments in cities, villages, and townships across the state. The trust fund is a bipartisan project meant to fill local funding gaps.

    LANSING, Mich. (WZMQ) – A Michigan report from the 2024 presidential election is shedding light on just how rare noncitizen voting is. Investigations from the Department of State (MDOS) found just 15 cases out of the 5.7 million ballots cast. The department compiled the report by comparing DMV records to the state’s Qualified Voter File (QVF) to show how many cases of noncitizen voting occur each year.

    HOLLAND, Mich.(WZMQ) – Millions of tulips are almost ready to blossom in Holland, Michigan. May 2-11, the city will welcome over 600,000 visitors for a week full of Dutch dance performances, guided tulip tours, and artisan markets for guests to browse. The flower beds are still looking a little green in downtown Holland, but in just one month, they’ll be blossoming with millions of colorful tulips.

    LANSING, Mich. (WZMQ) – April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and the Child Advocacy Centers (CAC) of Michigan are working to spread resources. In 2022, more than 50 Michigan children died as a result of abuse or neglect. The National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System reports that over 20,000 children were victims of maltreatment that year. Melissa Werkman is the CEO of CAC, a network that runs 40 centers and works with partners to provide services in 77 of Michigan’s 83 counties.

Another wave of votes out of Alger county put Karl Bohnak ahead of Jenn Hill in the 109 by about a thousand votes

The 109 is now 82% reporting and the incumbent, Representative Jenn Hill is in the lead by just about 200 votes.

In Marquette city people were voting until almost 9pm because of how long the line was when the polls closed. The county clerk originally estimated they’d be done counting by 12:30 but had even higher than expected voter turnout.
