The increase comes after a decline which was fueled by souring public sentiment toward law enforcement. In 2022, 432 people applied to the academy. A year later, that number jumped to 520, and this year, 603 people submitted their names for consideration. TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - The Salvation Army Service Center of Ottawa County is helping with the financial burden of back-to-school time by giving local families free school supplies. “I appreciate all the help I can get,” said Mary Cooley, who is raising her three grandchildren. “I got custody of them, and my husband just passed away this year, so it’s just me now.”It’s just her, but on Friday, Cooley and 110 other families got some help from the Salvation Army’s Tools for School program.

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - A Toledo woman who faked having cancer and took donations to pay for treatments she did not need was sentenced to six months in jail today, after pleading guilty to theft last month. “The remorse I carry with me every day is so much that if I could go back in time, I would,” Titkemeier said in court, reading from a statement. In addition to serving time, Lisa Titkemeier will be on probation for the next three years.

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - A Toledo man arrested Wednesday for illegally selling fireworks out of his home on the 1900 block of Ketner Avenue is speaking out. “I had no idea I couldn’t even sell fireworks. I didn’t know that was a thing,” Edward Deluna, 35, said. Deluna estimates he had $40,000 dollars worth of fireworks in his garage when officers from the Toledo Police Department and Toledo Fire and Rescue Department’s Joint Arson Unit arrested him.

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - A Toledo landlord has spent more than 25 days trying to reclaim his property from squatters, and the process isn’t over yet. “You just can’t go into somebody’s property, take possession and you don’t own it,” Jeff Savage, the owner of Toledo Transformation and more than 500 properties across the county, said. Unfortunately for Savage, that’s not actually the case. Savage went to check on one of his properties after evicting a previous tenant last month.
