In 1992, Henry Ross Perot Jr. was drafted into an independent presidential run. The Texan Businessman and billionaire had, at the time, gained some political notoriety for throwing his wealth around. He had, two decades before, hired a private militia to free employees of his company who had been taken hostage in Iran. The operation—titled, HOTFOOT (Help Our Two Friends Out Of Tehran)—had thrust the serial entrepreneur into the political spotlight.

Midway through November, every resident in University Pointe had their apartments entered by a team of maintenance workers. Their contract? Uninstall all traditional locks and replace them with a smartphone-controlled digital system. Previously, all residents had key fobs supplied by the building. This had been the system for years. Madison Harms—a resident in the student apartment complex—described her experience during the lock changeover. “They only gave us 24-hour notice of entry,” she said.

This decision initially arose due to the renovation of Providence Park, and later because of scheduling conflicts with professional soccer teams—the Portland Thorns and Portland Timbers—who also call the facility home.
