A worldwide pandemic causes amnesia, plaguing a large portion of the population and stripping them of their identities. Our unnamed main character wakes up on a public bus in Athens without any identification.

For most of my life, the prospect of the world ending has been a lingering fear in the back of my mind. The thought is nearly impossible to escape. From our media to our education system, it’s becoming common knowledge that existence as we know it is ending. Of course, this fear is not irrational—I’ve taken a biology class. I know the parts-per-million of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has reached uncontrollable levels, consistently breaking records.

Pumpkins are the staple fruit of the Fall season—synonymous with Halloween and the festivities that follow it. People love exploring pumpkin patches with their loved ones, making pie and carving faces into the rind—but you can only eat pie and seeds for so long. In reality, a pumpkin is nothing but a menial, degradable member on a small, tiny branch of the gourd family tree. These pathetic gourds bring shame to their gourd brethren.

This week, the staff at 5th Avenue Cinema—Oregon’s only student-run theater—has chosen to project Cinema Paradiso. Giuseppe Tornatore wrote and directed this heartwarming Italian classic which beautifully captures the essence of nostalgia and the magic of cinema. Set in a small Sicilian village, the plot revolves around filmmaker Salvatore Di Vita as he reflects on his childhood and the influence of his local movie theater, Cinema Paradiso.
