In January of 2024, much of the West Coast faced an intense winter storm that blanketed the City of Portland in snow and ice. According to an article by Noelle Crombie with OregonLive, the freeze covered the city in around 1-3 inches of snow, plunging temperatures below freezing for about a week and bringing the city to a halt as roads and sidewalks iced over. I was a naive Californian who had only lived in the city for a few months before the storm.

To many, the Election results on the fifth came as a shock. Donald Trump will be the 47th President of the United States of America. Not only did he sweep aside the democrats in every single swing state, he also won the popular vote by – at the time of writing – about three million. This is undoubtedly a massive upset. Joe Biden, the incumbent President, won his election handily. He received 74 more electoral votes and won the popular vote.

As I write this, it is currently one day before election night. I do not know who is going to win, and I am actually quite worn out from writing and thinking about politics. This is a very controversial time electorally though, and so I can’t reallyescape it. I don’t even want to escape it. I think being educated about politics and following it on any level is fundamentally important.

In 1992, Henry Ross Perot Jr. was drafted into an independent presidential run. The Texan Businessman and billionaire had, at the time, gained some political notoriety for throwing his wealth around. He had, two decades before, hired a private militia to free employees of his company who had been taken hostage in Iran. The operation—titled, HOTFOOT (Help Our Two Friends Out Of Tehran)—had thrust the serial entrepreneur into the political spotlight.

There is an eternal battle fought every Halloween, and it has raged since the holiday’s inception. This battle is between werewolves and vampires—two of the most popular and easily recognizable monsters. It’s both a horror and fantasy staple, one that probably started all the way back in the 1948 film Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. In that movie, The Wolf Man and Dracula face off in a final battle which ends in their mutual destruction.

From 2016 to 2020, acts of violence and harassment against Hispanic people were rampant. This ranged from individual, emboldened racists who came out of the woodworks of suburban United States all the way to the state who deputized Immigrations and Customs Enforcement to reach into working class neighborhoods and tear out immigrants via mass raids on cities. I was moving through school at this time.

At the beginning of summer, in front of the popular Mak’s Mini Mart on Broadway Street, two banners went up advertising a new pod of food carts to take root next to the store. One was emblazoned with “New Food Carts Coming Soon” in bold text, the other provided further details on the development.

Portland State University’s community has been pushing for widespread reforms. This struggle kicked into high gear at the outset of the latest bout of Israeli aggression towards Palestine, specifically the most recent invasion of the Gaza Strip. Students took particular issue with the relationship between PSU and Boeing, a company supplying bombs and weapons to Israel. One of the most notable demands by student activists is that PSU ultimately divest from companies with ties to the State of Israel.

Backpack-donning students looking to shop at Safeway in between classes must make a decision: leave your backpack with security at the door, or come back later without it. At the beginning of April, the Safeway on Jefferson Street introduced a new bag policy which bans backpacks and some other outside bags from entering the store. Upper store management implemented the policy to deflect the store’s ongoing issues with shoplifting, said a Safeway manager.
