Dean H. Azule, 74, from Salem, Oregon passed away on October 4, 2024 from congestive heart failure and fluid in his lungs. Virgil T Golden Funeral Services provided his funeral service and viewing in Salem on October 8, 2024 at 1:30 p.m. Robert Tom officiated his services. A meal was held on October 8 at Portland State University Native Center at 4:30 p.m. As he requested, he was cremated.

Students, faculty and community members gathered in room 428 of Cramer Hall on Nov. 3 to celebrate the opening of Portland State’s DREAMer Resource Center. The center is a space dedicated to DREAMers, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA) recipients, those who are undocumented or mixed-status, immigrants and their allied communities.

Earlier this year, Governor Tina Kotek formed the Portland Central City Task Force (PCCTF). PCCTF is charged with forming a plan to improve the city and address issues such as houselessness, crime and drug-use. The task force includes city leaders, such as Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler, business owners and other community leaders. This roster is missing one important group—people who actually live and work downtown.

Latinos comprise the largest minority group in Oregon at 14% of the population. The state’s Latinx population has increased by 113% over the past 20 years, and now six Oregon counties account for a more significant percentage of Latinx residents than the national average of 19%. However, Latinx representation in Oregon’s education falls exceptionally short of these numbers. Only 6.6% of Oregon school teachers are Latinx—as are a mere seven out of 194 school district superintendents.
