A council has called the government's way of handing out cash for local services "Dickensian."Swindon Borough Council expects to get £14m for potholes over the next ten years, boosted by cash saved by cancelling HS2. The government said it has freed up more money than ever for local roads repairs. The council said it brings the local pothole budget each year up to £6m, but the backlog on repairs stands at £119m.

Thieves took a number of "goblets and ornaments" from the 800-year-old Malmesbury Abbey, as well as money from the donation box. A national league south football club chair has said they do not want "hooligans" watching after a second racist incident at one of their matches. At the Chippenham Town versus Farnborough match on Tuesday, racist abuse was shouted at a black player. It is believed the man was a Farnborough fan and he was removed from the ground, Hardenhuish Park. Earlier in the season, a Taunton fan was thrown out for the same reason.

Almost £2 million is to be spent to help improve wildlife habitats along a busy dual carriageway. The National Highways money will help boost wildflowers domains along the A303 in Wiltshire and restore a section of the River Avon. It is hoped the work will improve the area for many species, including fish, otters, birds, bees and butterflies. Ben Hewlett from the National Highways said it will also "reduce long-term maintenance costs".
