MOULTRIE -- Ramsey Dennis ran the opening kickoff back 72 yards for a touchdown and Colquitt County never trailed in a 48-20 first-round Class AAAAAA state playoff victory over Wheeler on Friday at Mack Tharpe Stadium. The Region 1AAAAAA champion Packers (8-3) advanced to host Collins Hill in a second-round matchup. Wheeler, the No. 4 team from Region 5AAAAAA, finished the season with a 2-9 record.

Marietta's Mary Nesmith and Pope's Josie Hutchinson led a group of nine Cobb County runners who were named to the Atlanta Track Club's 2024 All-Metro Cross Country Team. Held annually since 1964, the all-metro awards are the organziation's oldest tradition. It selected 42 runners to honor on this year's squad -- 21 girls and 21 boys.

Leah DeWitt had her second straight 30-point game as Marietta rolled past Douglas County 85-16 on Thursday. DeWitt, a freshman, finished with 31 points, nine assists and four rebounds. Mackenzie Everett had 17 points and five steals, Kennedi Cox finished with 15 points and Janiah Scott had 14 points and six steals. Kyann Senior added eight points, nine rebounds and six steals. The Blue Devils (2-1) will travel to Holy Innocents’ on Thursday.

Walton begins its quest for a return trip to the state finals as it hosts perennial Georgia powerhouse Valdosta in the first round of the Class AAAAAA playoffs at Raider Valley on Friday. The Raiders (7-3), last year’s Class AAAAAAA runner-up, will be well rested going into the postseason as they play their first game in three weeks – finishing the regular season with a 42-17 victory over North Paulding on Oct. 26.
