The next two history lectures at the Ottawa Historical and Scouting Heritage Museum, 1100 Canal St., will be just a week apart because of speaker availability. Jane DePaoli and Ann Newell will speak about the La Salle County Paupers Cemetery on Sunday, April 28. Then on Sunday, May 5, Hank Walsh will present Murder on the Illinois & Michigan Canal, with a few personal memories. Lectures begin at 2 p.m. for each. Cost is $10 with the proceeds going to the museum’s new building fund.

A flagship attraction at Kennywood, the Steel Curtain roller coaster, will not open this season. Kennywood made the announcement Wednesday. In a video, the amusement park’s assistant general manager, Ricky Spicuzza, said the coaster will undergo an “extensive modification project.”“We understand the frustration many of you have felt not being able to experience Steel Curtain,” Mr. Spicuzza said.

Farrell did it at the plate too with three hits and a pair of RBIs. Ruari Bengford and Paul Kakoliris had two hits each for DeKalb (13-4, 4-1). Hinckley-Big Rock 11, Hiawatha 1 (5 inn.): At Hinckley, the Royals banged out 11 hits to match the 11 runs they scored in a Little Ten Conference win.

Oswego 2, Plainfield North 1Noah Mottet allowed one run on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts over five innings, and Hayden Bowman struck out five over two innings of no-hit relief for the visiting Panthers (10-5-1, 2-0 SPC West), who won the first two games of the three-game series. Offensively, Easton Ruby was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI.

To say it’s been a strong start for the Joliet West boys volleyball team would be underselling it. Its only two losses have come to Lockport and Bolingbrook, who had combined for only three losses. The Tigers entered Tuesday night’s date with Providence Catholic riding a nine-match winning streak. At the match’s conclusion, the winning streak was extended to 10. Nate Fleischauer had nine kills, Landon Brouwer had 20 assists and Joliet West earned a road sweep of the Celtics, 25-17, 26-24.

CRYSTAL LAKE – Hampshire freshman Langston Kelly has had a knack for making the most of scoring chances early in her career. She did so once again in a critical early moment against Prairie Ridge on Tuesday afternoon. Kelly used her speed to create another scoring chance and give the Whip-Purs an early lead. That’d be all Hampshire needed as it held on to stay undefeated in Fox Valley Conference play with a 1-0 win at the MAC Sports Center. “I just kind of see it and go to it,” Kelly said.

Riley Gumm said that she didn’t need much convincing from Anya Gulbrandsen to return to Oswego East soccer, even if it was a compelling case. The two Oswego East seniors, best of friends, met in first grade and have played together since elementary school, both for school and club teams. As sophomores in 2022, they teamed up to lead the Wolves to the program’s first regional title. After opting to stick with her club team last spring, Gumm is now back.

No one was injured in a barn fire in Yorkville Monday night. The fire remains under investigation. At 8:18 p.m., the Bristol Kendall Fire Protection District responded after a dispatcher reported that the wooden roof of an old barn at a residential property in the 900 block of Lisbon Road had caught fire, according to a release from the fire district. Firefighters arrived to find the roof of a dilapidated barn on fire, according to the release. A home was about 200 feet away from the barn.
