Heavy snow in the mountains today with high winds for the eastern plains

Today, we're seeing a mix of mountain snow and gusty winds that will impact travel, especially in the higher elevations. Snowfall is expected to pick up today and into the evening, with most mountain passes receiving 5-10 inches of snow. There may be even higher amounts in the favored, higher areas. So if you're headed into the mountains today or tomorrow, be prepared for some winter weather and potentially slick roads.

Sunday, a high-pressure system will start to build over the region, bringing warmer and drier conditions over Colorado. Winds will remain strong at higher elevations, with gusts of 60-75 mph above timberline, while lower elevations will experience breezy conditions. Temperatures will climb into the 60s across the plains and urban areas under mostly clear sky Sunday. Snow showers in the mountains will fade as the day progresses, leaving behind a sunny afternoon.

DENVER— It'll be a beautiful Sunday across Colorado with plenty of sunshine, seasonal temperatures and good traveling weather. Temperatures will will be in the low 50s this afternoon across the metro-area and plains. Dry weather will stick around statewide for the day. Our northern and central mountain towns will mainly see highs in the mid to upper 30s. Quiet weather will continue through next week, with light winds across the plains and fewer gusts in the mountains starting later today.

SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. — A light dusting of snow covered parts of the high country Saturday as Colorado ski areas ramped up preparations for the upcoming ski season. Snow fell in parts of the mountains overnight, with around 3 inches recorded near Fairplay, Floyd Hill and Aspen Park, according to the National Weather Service. A winter storm warning is in effect for the San Juans until Sunday morning for 1 to 2 feet of snow above 8,500 feet. Winter weather advisories are in effect for the E.

Colorado is parched, so this storm was a welcome sight. While the metro-area saw some moisture, the heaviest precipitation impacted southern Colorado. The southwestern mountains will see the heaviest snow sticking around near Telluride until Sunday midday. Highs were in the mid 60s for Denver on Saturday, but will be in the 70s this afternoon. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the San Juans until Sunday morning for 1 to 2 feet of snow above 8,500 feet in elevation.

DENVER — It was a warm and dry Saturday in the Denver area with highs in the lower 80s. Officially our high was 81 degrees at DIA. Another cold front will zip across the state into Sunday morning, dropping temperatures yet again. Daytime highs will be a bit closer to normal on Sunday, in the low to mid 70s for the Broncos game! Overall, it’s a great time to enjoy the outdoors in Denver before the colder weather sets in.

Today, a cold front will arrive, bringing dry and cooler air. You might notice some clouds in the sky, but it won’t rain. The winds will shift and start blowing from the north, which will keep temperatures a bit cooler than yesterday. We can expect temperatures to reach the mid to upper 70s. Afternoon highs will be in the low 90s for the Front Range on this Labor Day. Dry conditions for the metro area, a few isolated showers are possible in the mountains. If you live east of Denver, expect breezy & gusty winds later today. Starting Monday night and into Tuesday, the weather should be pretty steady with usual wind patterns. We’ll have an upper-level ridge in place, which means no big weather changes are expected.

DENVER-Today will be pretty calm as warmer, drier air moves in from the northwest. Expect a mostly sunny day with temperatures around five degrees warmer than usual. In the afternoon, you might see a few fluffy clouds over the central mountains, but they’re unlikely to bring more than a light sprinkle. There will be some smoke drifting over the Front Range this morning from fires in western Wyoming and Idaho. While the smoke won’t be too thick, you might notice it in the air.
