The Monmouth Fair opened Wednesday and will run through Saturday. Gates open at 10 a.m. and the midway opens at 2 p.m. featuring $25 ride bracelets. Admission will cost $7 for those 13 and older and is free for children 12 and younger. Fair highlights include the farmers’ horse pull day, a kiddie tractor pull, a free bike drawing, frying pan and hay bale toss events and more. WATERVILLE — Jessecca Craig had already cast her vote, but she couldn’t stop watching patrons place stickers on the poster of animal sculptures in the library lobby. “For me, I was really gunning for the seal,” Craig, a librarian at Waterville Public Library, said. “But there’d be moments where in the beginning certain art pieces were not getting as much attention, so I was waiting, like: ‘Is somebody going to put a sticker on that one today?'”It made the day go by a little faster.

PITTSTON — Maine’s agricultural fair season kicks off today with the Pittston Fair, which runs through Sunday. Highlights include a pig scramble at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, He Man/She Woman competition at 6 p.m. Friday, demolition derby at 3 p.m. Saturday and the Baby Contest at 11 a.m. Sunday. The fair was moved to June a few years ago, because that’s when midway rides were available, according to Pete Weeks, vice president of the Pittston Fair Association.

AUGUSTA — A bird of prey aggressively protecting its nest has prompted the closure of two trails at Bond Brook Recreation Area after it attacked a trail runner and sank its talons into his head. The runner, according to a social media post, suffered multiple scratches on his head and went to urgent care to have the scratches cleaned out and sanitized, but was otherwise OK.
