Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse Police Chief Joe Cecil Thursday defended officers striking a man during an arrest, but said some policies and procedures were violated. The chief issued a statement late Thursday about the arrest of two men on South Avenue on Wednesday afternoon after a traffic stop. A video posted online by a bystander of the arrests had generated outrage by some online with commenters questioning the arrests and some calling for an investigation.

Syracuse, N.Y. — The huge, four-story brick building on Syracuse’s North Side for years was home to the Sisters of St. Francis. It also served as part of Maria Regina College, a Catholic junior college for women founded in 1961 and closed in 1988. Overnight Friday and Saturday, the building was badly damaged - possibly a total loss - when fire ripped through the 129-year-old building designed by famed Syracuse architect Archimedes Russel.

Lake effect snow Thursday night through Saturday morning dumped a lot of snow on Central New York. Oswego County and northern Onondaga County were hit hard. Oneida and Madison counties also got their share of snow. The storm made driving hard, especially in and around Central Square. Who got the most snow? Here are the snowfall totals reported by the National Weather Service as of Saturday morning. Heavy snow hits Central Square at about 9 a.m. on Feb. 14, 2025.

Manlius, N.Y. — A state vulnerable person alert has been issued for a missing 86-year-old Fayetteville man with dementia. Peter J. Mackie was last seen at about 3 p.m. Friday on Irving Avenue in Syracuse, according to the alert requested by the Manlius Police Department. He was driving a 2013 Honda CRV with New York plates, DUV8205. He may be in need of medical attention, the alert said. He weas last seen wearing a black John Deere hat, black winter jacket, blue cargo pants.

Orchard Park, N.Y. — Buffalo Bills stadium crews are clearing out 18 inches of snow that fell on the team’s hometown of Orchard Park this weekend. The good news is that the forecast for today is for 2 to 3 inches, a bit less than what the National Weather Service was originally forecasting Sunday for Orchard Park. The latest forecast this morning for kickoff at 8:20 p.m. today calls for a temperature of 26 degrees and a wind chill of 16 degrees.
