Trump administration funding cuts and limitations on federal government employees are affecting a major scientific conference on the Great Lakes opening Monday in Milwaukee. May 23, President Donald Trump signed an executive order “to restore Gold Standard Science.” The order claims the action is needed “rebuild public trust in science.”But scientific groups claim the new administration is having the opposite effect. The Union of Concerned Scientists’ blog slammed the executive order.

Two mid-Michigan food institutions are merging. Cops and Doughnuts and Halo Burger have long been destinations for comfort foodies in mid-Michigan. Now, the two chains are partnering. The Cops and Doughnuts chain opened its first location in 2009, when a group of police officers banded together to save a failing Clare bakery. Halo Burger has been around Genesee County for more than a century, starting life as Kewpee.

A new study finds even low levels of lead exposure early in life can affect a child’s future academic performance. University of Iowa professor George Wehby studied data on 300,000 second through eleventh graders and their exposure to lead. His study found for adolescents, academic achievement may be affected by early childhood lead exposure at much lower levels than previously assumed.

A new poll on the economy finds nearly half of Michiganders say they believe the state is on the “right track.” But that percentage is down from another poll earlier in 2025. In the Glengariff-Group poll, 45.5% of respondents said Michigan was on the right track, down from 52% in January. 37.4% of respondents to the recent survey said they thought Michigan was on the wrong track, up from 35.0% in January.
