LEWISTON — SeniorsPlus, a nonprofit devoted to serving older Mainers, expected to break ground this spring on a new education and nutrition center on Mollison Way. The planned $5.5 million building will house a kitchen for the nonprofit’s Meals on Wheels program serving three counties, along with an education center to help Maine’s aging population access technology. But there’s a hitch.

A Lewiston lawmaker is pushing for Maine legislators to recognize two important Islamic holy days as state holidays. State Rep. Mana Abdi, a Lewiston Democrat, said both Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha should be added to other holidays, including Christmas and Thanksgiving.

After losing a 2022 bid to return to the Blaine House, former Gov. Paul LePage moved out of Maine and returned to a home he owns in Florida. In March 2023, LePage registered to vote as a Republican in Flagler County and remains on the rolls there. But the Bangor Daily News reports that despite having his home in Ormond Beach, which his wife purchased in 2018, the 76-year-old LePage is eyeing the possibility of running for a U.S. House seat in Maine’s conservative-leaning 2nd District.
