Kellen Bettinger, 13, of Orwell, showed off his all-around sportsman’s skills recently with a terrific twofer: a turkey and a trout. Kellen caught a superb 27-inch steelhead on a local stream near his Tug Hill home using an earthworm for bait. Not long after that, he shot a tom on his family’s 100-acre property in Orwell. Kellen is also a four-season athlete, playing basketball, football, and baseball.

Chris Channels and his son, Zachary, of Camillus, recently did a little night fishing for walleye off the dock at Campbells Point in Henderson Bay. Within the first 20 minutes, both men caught a nice walleye. Zach’s measured 22 inches and weighed 4 lbs; Chris’s fish was slightly smaller, coming in at 21 inches weighing 3.75 lbs. Both ‘eyes swallowed a Rapala X rap. Chris said the fish were smaller than what they were used to catching, but he’s not complaining.

The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry timbersports team took home a trio of trophies after sweeping the 77th annual Spring Meet in April. ESF’s Mighty Oaks won all three divisions: Men’s, Women’s, and Jack and Jill.

Cold, rainy weather couldn’t dampen the spirits of more than 100 women from CNY who recently attended the 17th annual Women in Nature event at Camillus Sportsmen’s Club. Organized by the Onondaga County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs, the event is free, and registration fills up quickly. The goal of Women in Nature is to give women a taste of various outdoor pursuits, from shooting sports and archery, to orienteering and wild game cooking, in a non-intimidating environment.
