    MOUNT VERNON - The U.S. Justice Department has discontinued an investigation into claims of civil rights violations against the Mount Vernon Police Department, along with seven other police forces across the country. In a report released in December 2024, the Justice Department under the Biden administration determined that Mount Vernon police routinely violated the constitutional rights of its residents.

    NYACK - Six college-bound students with ambitions of law enforcement careers will receive $1,000 scholarships from a memorial fund honoring the two police officers murdered in the 1981 Brinks robbery. The scholarships, started in 1991, honor Nyack Police Sgt. Edward O'Grady and Officer Waverly "Chipper" Brown. Both officers were killed during the Brinks armored car robbery on Oct. 20, 1981, by a gang of self-proclaimed revolutionaries.

    SPRING VALLEY - A purportedly drug-impaired taxi driver has been indicted on multiple counts of beating up a woman at knifepoint inside his cab, the Rockland district attorney announced on Monday. A grand jury returned several felony charges against Kevin Mazariego-Figueroa, 22, of Hillcrest, in a brutal attack on a Monsey woman he picked up in his cab on May 5, District Attorney Thomas Walsh said in a news release. Mazariego-Figueroa picked up the passenger near 59 Route 59 in Monsey.
