Police recovered a significant amount of cocaine during a June 21 traffic stop north of Holmen, according to a criminal complaint filed in La Crosse County Circuit Court. Mayking A. Murillo Palacia, 27, Sparta, was charged with a single felony count of possession of cocaine with intent to deliver. According to the complaint, Murillo Palacia was northbound on Hwy. 53 when he was pulled over for driving 75 mph in a 55-mph zone.

Emergency responders from Sparta rescued a horse from a manure pit Sunday. According to the Sparta Area Fire Protection District, crews responded around 10 a.m. to 5628 Cedar Road north of Sparta, where a horse had entered into a manure pit and couldn't get out. Crews used tow straps to lift the horse from the pit. The horse walked back to the barn as crews cleared the scene. Due to temperatures that exceeded 90 degrees Sunday, the horse was watered down and examined by a veterinarian.

A 62-year-old Westby man was arrested for drunken driving after police pulled him over April 19 for a having a car license plate attached to his pickup truck. Steven W. Scharping was charged in La Crosse County Circuit Court with felony counts of fourth-offense drunken driving and fourth-offense operating with a prohibited blood-alcohol content. According to the criminal complaint, police noticed the license plate discrepancy as Scharping was traveling 38 mph in a 55-mph zone on Hwy.
