In a church pew, Alyssa Onnen sat frustrated. What was wrong? The 2024 state meet had been outwardly good for Onnen, winning three all-class gold medals for the best girls track and field team in any class, Kearney Catholic. Who knew she was in pain? Had been since mid-season. A decent amount of painkillers were required, she said, to get her through the state meet. She kept going, the pole vaulter competing at the Nike Outdoor Nationals a month later.

OMAHA — Brooklyn Schroeder kept Blair’s special season going. The sophomore goalkeeper made saves on Omaha Skutt’s last two kickers in a Class B first-round shootout that went to the sixth round. Blair won the shootout 5-4 and the Morrison Stadium match 1-0 in its first state appearance since 2001. “It was a little nerve-wracking, but we got it done in the end,’’ Schroeder said. How many shootouts had the fifth-ranked Bears (16-2) experienced this season? Zero.

It’s Omaha’s touchstone moment. Like Pearl Harbor or 9/11, Omahans of certain age remember where they were when an EF-4 tornado struck the heart of the city in 1975. It traveled nine miles south to north, hugging the city’s main north-south thoroughfare, 72nd Street, for the last half, during its 29-minute life of destruction in the late afternoon. The tornado was indiscriminate.
