Fairfield school board approves grant at meeting

FAIRFIELD - The Fairfield Board of Trustees approved a Learning Recovery Emergency Block Grant at Thursday nights meeting. The grant provides one-time funds for learning recovery initiatives through the 2027/28 school year. It also supports staff and pupil social and emotional well-being according to presenter Dr. Sheila McCabe, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services. The staff developed a plan to use the funds in the coming years. There plan covers key issues for student learning.

FAIRFIELD — Sixth graders in the Travis Unified School District will be seeing big changes in a couple years with classes moving from the current campuses to Golden West Middle School. FAIRFIELD - The new superintendent for Travis Unified School District will be a familiar face to many, Tiffany Benson who is the current Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services. The board of trustees made the announcement at Tuesday nights meeting. Benson has been at the district since July 2021 when she took the position of Director of Curriculum and Instruction. Last year she was made Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services.

FAIRFIELD — Patsy McKissick had the card table set in the meeting room at the Fairfield Adult Recreation Center. She was ready to start a game of card bingo for the newly revamped Senior Social Club at the introductory party on Tuesday. She has only been a member of the Senior Social Club for three months, but is really enjoying the activities so far. "We have a lot of members who are just wonderful," she said.

FAIRFIELD — The International Bird Rescue open house is an annual event that celebrates local migrations and offers a chance for an informational day at the center. On Saturday, visitors didn't get the usual tour and for a good reason. At the moment, pelicans along the coastline are facing a health crisis and the International Bird Rescue is doing what it does and working diligently to save them.
Dixon May Fair auction nets youths money for future

DIXON — The Junior Livestock Auction at the Dixon May Fair was packed with buyers and sellers for the 147th annual fair. First up to auction were quail; Ryder Fair, 14 of Vacaville was not one of the 4-H or FFA kids but raised two quail this year for auction as an independent. A couple of years ago his family moved to a farm in rural Vacaville and he realized that there was an opportunity to raise animals. "I discovered the Dixon May Fair and decided to try raising quail," he said.

Dixon May Fair gets ready for long weekend of fun

DIXON — The Dixon Fairgrounds early Thursday morning smelled of caramel corn from Dynamite Kettle Corn. The bustling crowds expected in the evening were nowhere to be found, instead preparations for the three-day Dixon May Fair were underway. Just past the front gates was the Lemonade Stand owned by Liesel Williams. Her staff was helping put up the tent and siding for the stand with a bit of a breeze blowing things around.
