“I think it’s really welcomed. We are really thankful for that,” said Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) Chief Tammy Cook-Searson. Her band joined the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation and Montreal Lake Cree Nation in issuing a joint State of Emergency on May 28. Prior to that, several northern communities, including Pelican Narrows, Denare Beach, Hall Lake, Southend and Montreal Lake, had been evacuated.

The new service, which is about a year ahead of schedule, graduated its first class of nine officers last month and will now start deploying officers into the field as part of the second phase of its push towards full operation.
