Follow a trail of live jazz music through downtown Rapid City as a new festival makes its debut. Black Hills Jazz Fest will present an afternoon and evening of jazz in bars, restaurants and retail shops, starting at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 26, and continuing into the evening. Admission is free to hear the music at each location. Several venues are family friendly.

A silent protest is planned Wednesday, April 16, in Rapid City outside a sold-out luncheon where Sen. John Thune will speak to a Republican-only group. The protest will take place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Baken Park on the public sidewalk in front of Qdoba and Black Hills Urgent Care, facing Mountain View Road. Thune will be a guest at the Pennington County Republican Women’s monthly luncheon at The Park restaurant. Ticket sales were open to registered members of the Republican party.

A new safety initiative, Barn Burner, is fighting back against drink spiking and date rape. Deadwood is the first community in the Black Hills to launch this campaign to keep locals and visitors safer when they’re out for a night on the town. Residents and tourists will see posters in bars throughout Deadwood that list red flags that a woman has had her drink spiked. Those warning signs include becoming intoxicated too quickly, appearing confused or emotionless, or leaning on others.

For the second year, Black Hills Area Community Foundation’s Thriving Communities initiative invites local residents to give their feedback and vote for a cause to support through grant funds. Thriving Communities is an annual initiative that allows Black Hills residents to guide more than $100,000 in grant funds to nonprofit organizations that serve the region.

Speed Goat Express Coffee Co. opened March 17 at 532 St. Joseph St. in downtown Rapid City. Owners Rob and Julie Mahaffey, both born and raised in South Dakota, are avid outdoors enthusiasts who share a interest for pronghorn antelope.
