The South Dakota Mines football team closes out its season against rival Chadron State on Saturday in a battle for the Eagle Rock Trophy at Don Beebe Stadium. Mines took its first win over the Eagles in 15 games last season. The Hardrockers hope to send away their seniors with a win and bring the Eagle Rock Trophy back to Mines this year. Series HistoryChadron State is 51-24 all-time against the Hardrockers, dating back to the first meeting between the two schools on Nov. 17, 1905.

CHADRON, Neb. — Two second-quarter interceptions pushed Chadron State in front, and South Dakota Mines never recovered on Saturday at Don Beebe Stadium. The Eagles took their first lead on a pick-six and went up 21-3 in the second when another interception gave them a short field. The Hardrockers fought back from their early deficit but fell short, as Chadron State secured a 27-19 victory and reclaimed the Eagle Rock Trophy. “We continue to kill ourselves,” Mines head coach Charlie Flohr said.

Rapid City Stevens just missed the podium last season and is striving to make its back during the Class AA state tennis tournament set for Thursday and Friday at the Sioux Park Tennis Complex and Parkview Tennis Courts. Brandon Valley finished sixth place with 206.5 points while the Raiders tallied 189 points for seventh. “We’ve had a crazy season with weather, injuries and different things that everybody has had,” Rapid City Stevens head coach Jason Olson said.

The Comets have a target on their backs after dominating the Class A tournament last season. They dominated the doubles to win all three flights and took five of six singles titles last year. The state will see if the Comets can defend their titles while staying in town on Monday and Tuesday as matches will be played at the Sioux Park Tennis Complex and Parkview Tennis Courts.

Hot Springs’ Braden Peterson secured first-place finishes in three events Friday with new bests at the Black Hills Conference Track Meet at O’Harra Stadium. The top-ranked Class A sprinter started his day by surpassing his previous best to win the 100-meter dash with a personal record of 10.85 seconds. “It feels good especially when I didn’t think my blocks were very good,” Peterson said of his 100-meter run. “I didn’t think it was that fast.
