The Biden Administration says the U.S. Chamber of Congress, the American Bankers Association, the Consumer Bankers Association, and state business groups, sought a friendly court when they filed a lawsuit challenging the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s final credit card late fee rule. Texas federal courts have a decidedly conservative bent and generally are not fans of strict regulatory regimes.

The National Association of Realtors has agreed to a landmark settlement that would eliminate real estate brokers’ long-standing automatic commissions, commonly of up to 6% of the purchase price. Instead, home buyers and sellers would be able to negotiate fees with their agents upfront. If the $418 million legal agreement is approved by a federal court, consumer advocates predict the ranks of real estate agents will thin, further driving down commission prices.

This week I will attend a special meeting of the members of a coop in which I participate. The purpose is to approve a change in the bylaws prior to the annual meeting. The change will reduce the number of board members from 15 to 12. The bylaws have not been updated in 20 years. All changes must be approved by the members.

The number of Americans that are members of credit unions increased to over 142 million in January, according to the recently released America’s Credit Unions’ Monthly Credit Union Estimates. Additionally, the estimates revealed that credit union loans outstanding and savings balances declined slightly in January.
