CHARLESTON -- For the first time in three seasons, Class AAAA will crown a new boys basketball state tournament champion. Morgantown's potential game-winning 3-point shot missed its mark at the horn to preserve a 49-47 win for George Washington on Friday in the WVSSAC Class AAAA state tournament semifinals, ending the reign of the three-time defending state champions at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center. The final shot was set up by an inbounds play for Morgantown with four seconds left.

CHARLESTON — A game-high 18 points from Talan Muscari and a clutch late basket from Konnor Fox helped fourth-seeded Wyoming East outlast fifth-seeded Logan during a classic defensive nailbiter in the first round of the WVSSAC Class AA boys basketball state tournament on Tuesday night. “I told MetroNews in there, ‘I know you guys have had some pretty lackluster games.’ Hatch and I made sure that didn’t happen here at 11 o'clock tonight,” Wyoming East coach Kent McBride said.

The weather outside has been freezing cold most of the last few weeks. What wasn’t cold Tuesday night was the George Washington boys basketball team’s shooting from the floor against county rival South Charleston. The Patriots shot 27 for 43 from the floor and 10 for 16 from long distance in a 66-40 home win. Five GW players connected on triples in the victory. The hot shooting paced the Class AAAA No. 3-ranked Patriots (12-0) past the No. 9 Black Eagles (7-3) in front of a standing-room-only crowd.
