FORT PAYNE, Ala. (WHNT) — Voters in Fort Payne voted Tuesday to keep a property tax in place to help the city’s school system. During a special election on Tuesday, residents voted 297 for continuing the tax, with only 37 votes against. The measure means the city will continue to raise a 7.5 mill tax on property in the city for the next 30 years. This means taxpayers in the city will need to pay a .75 cent tax for each hundred dollars of assessed value on their property.

HAZEL GREEN, Ala. (WHNT) — Hazel Green High School’s Splatoon 3 team came in second in the state on April 28, but they are already looking for the next challenge. It’s May 2, and part of the high school’s esports team is staying after school on a Friday in the middle of a thunderstorm. Hazel Green High School’s Splatoon 3 competition team is going up against one of the program’s recreational teams. It’s four on four, best out of five rounds overseen by the team’s coach, Travis Bailey.

DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — The Decatur Police Department says a man was arrested Thursday for a theft from an Athens business that partially took place in Decatur. DPD said in November 2024, an Athens business owner reported a theft of around $60,000, nearly $8,000 of which was reportedly stolen in Decatur City limits. The department said investigators eventually identified Griffin Scott Littlefield and Griffin Scott Littlefield II as suspects.

TOWN CREEK, Ala. (WHNT) — Lawrence County School officials say Hatton Elementary School was put on lockdown Monday afternoon after a student was found with an airsoft gun. According to a post on the school’s Facebook page, a student safety concern involving a possible weapon on campus was reported shortly before dismissal, causing the school to go into lockdown as a precaution. The system said law enforcement and school officials responded quickly and, after a search, recovered an airsoft gun.

JACKSON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — The National Weather Service has confirmed an EF-1 tornado from Saturday’s storms. The tornado began near Rosalie in Jackson County and tracked east through Ider and Sulphur Springs in DeKalb County. The NWS said the storm had maximum winds of about 100 mph. NWS has been out in Jackson County on Monday surveying damage. The survey crews found snapped hardwood trees in the area.
