DEDHAM, Mass. — Jury selection in the retrial of Karen Read, the woman accused in the death of her police officer boyfriend, continued Thursday, with the court reaching a panel of 16 jurors. Judge Beverly Cannone said the empanelment process would resume on Monday because she wants a jury of 18 people, including six alternates. As of right now, the jury consists of eight men and eight women, including a group of 12 deliberators and four alternates. The case will not be in court on Friday.

Karen Read says opening statements in her murder trial could begin next week as the defense and prosecution close in on a full roster of jurors. Three new jurors were added during jury selection Tuesday, after one was excused, bringing the total jury court to 12 through six days. At least 16 jurors must be seated for opening statements, and testimony can get underway. Forty-seven people from across Norfolk County were questioned by Judge Beverly Cannone and lawyers from both sides.

DEDHAM, Mass. — Karen Read’s lawyers filed an emergency petition to the U.S. Supreme Court to delay her retrial while they review the charges against her as no new jurors were added to her case Monday. Read’s defense had previously asked the country’s highest court to review and drop two of the three criminal charges against her: second-degree murder and leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death.

DEDHAM, Mass. — The first week of jury selection in the Karen Read trial just wrapped up, with 68 potentially new juror candidates screened in Dedham on Friday. Nearly 300 people from across Norfolk County have been questioned since Tuesday in Judge Beverly Cannone’s courtroom. So far, one juror has been added to the seats for the upcoming retrial, and another juror has been lost, leaving the total jurors still at 10 out of 16.
