Prominent Bay Ridgeite Victoria Hofmo was the guest speaker at the Oct. 18 monthly meeting of the Bay Ridge Historical Society. Hofmo is the president of the Scandinavian East Coast Museum, the Bay Ridge Conservancy and the Bay Ridge Arts and Cultural Alliance. During her talk she traced the Nordic roots of the Vikings and spoke about the Scandinavian countries of Norway, Sweden and Denmark. She also mentioned the early immigration of Norwegians and Swedes to Bay Ridge and South Brooklyn.

Heralded as the world’s largest celebration of Italian heritage, New York City’s 79th annual Columbus Day Parade stepped off Oct. 9 from 44th Street and trekked along Fifth Avenue to 72nd Street. The grand marshal was Beth Paretta, CEO and founder of Paretta Autosport, and the colorful march was sponsored by the Columbus Citizens Foundation. Two prominent honorees were former New York State Chief Justice Janet DiFiore and state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. The NYPD Marching Band led the parade.

As this year’s Ragamuffin Parade fades into memory, we can now look forward to the Bay Ridge Community Council’s 71st annual painting competition. For many years, it was known as the Halloween Art Window Painting Contest, but it has been rechristened as the Fall Art Poster and Window Painting Contest. According to BRCC Executive Secretary Maria Makrinos, the event will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 24, with a rain date of Thursday, Oct. 26.

A company of Army Junior ROTC cadets from Fort Hamilton H.S. once again participated in the annual Tunnel to the Towers Run and Walk on Sept. 24. The cadets took up posts along West Street in Manhattan, where they held large banners displaying photos of firefighters who died at the World Trade Center on 9/11. As a result of their volunteer effort, more than 30,000 participants exiting the Gov. Hugh L. Carey Tunnel saw some of the men they were honoring that day.
