Prominent Bay Ridgeite Victoria Hofmo was the guest speaker at the Oct. 18 monthly meeting of the Bay Ridge Historical Society. Hofmo is the president of the Scandinavian East Coast Museum, the Bay Ridge Conservancy and the Bay Ridge Arts and Cultural Alliance. During her talk she traced the Nordic roots of the Vikings and spoke about the Scandinavian countries of Norway, Sweden and Denmark. She also mentioned the early immigration of Norwegians and Swedes to Bay Ridge and South Brooklyn.

Heralded as the world’s largest celebration of Italian heritage, New York City’s 79th annual Columbus Day Parade stepped off Oct. 9 from 44th Street and trekked along Fifth Avenue to 72nd Street. The grand marshal was Beth Paretta, CEO and founder of Paretta Autosport, and the colorful march was sponsored by the Columbus Citizens Foundation. Two prominent honorees were former New York State Chief Justice Janet DiFiore and state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. The NYPD Marching Band led the parade.
Window-painting contest returns

As this year’s Ragamuffin Parade fades into memory, we can now look forward to the Bay Ridge Community Council’s 71st annual painting competition. For many years, it was known as the Halloween Art Window Painting Contest, but it has been rechristened as the Fall Art Poster and Window Painting Contest. According to BRCC Executive Secretary Maria Makrinos, the event will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 24, with a rain date of Thursday, Oct. 26.
Fort Hamilton cadets pay tribute to fallen

A company of Army Junior ROTC cadets from Fort Hamilton H.S. once again participated in the annual Tunnel to the Towers Run and Walk on Sept. 24. The cadets took up posts along West Street in Manhattan, where they held large banners displaying photos of firefighters who died at the World Trade Center on 9/11. As a result of their volunteer effort, more than 30,000 participants exiting the Gov. Hugh L. Carey Tunnel saw some of the men they were honoring that day.
It's Ragamuffin Parade time!

This coming Saturday afternoon, Sept. 30, Third Avenue once again will transform into a boulevard of fantasy and fun as hundreds of children get set to step off in the 57th Annual Ragamuffin Parade. Look for the brigade of youngsters, from toddlers to preteens, to be wearing their favorite homemade outfits or makeshift and store-bought costumes.

The Ragamuffin Parade Committee is urging adults who marched as youths in past parades and parents of kids who want to participate to attend a “Fun Fundraiser” on Sunday, Sept. 24. The committee has hosted the colorful Bay Ridge children’s parade since 1967. Forgoing the catered luncheons of previous years, the benefit will be held at the Leif, 6725 Fifth Ave., from 1 to 4 p.m. For a $20 cover fee, there will be live rock and roll music by the One2Many Band, food, raffles and a cash bar.
Fort Hamilton holds 9/11 remembrance ceremony

Three-star Gen. Steven W. Gilland, the superintendent of the United States Military Academy at West Point, was one of the speakers at Fort Hamilton’s annual observance of 9/11. The somber event took place on the grassy knoll behind the base’s community club, which was part of the original fort established in 1831. Staff Sgt.

The Brooklyn-based Long Island Assembly of the Knights of Columbus held its recent annual induction ceremony and reception at the Columbus K of C Council Hall in Flatbush. Edward Velinskie was installed as the 2023 faithful navigator to serve at the helm of the charitable Catholic fraternal service organization. All are members of the patriotic arm of the Knights of Columbus known as the 4th Degree.
Remembering America’s first prisoners of war

On Saturday morning, Aug. 26, the Society of Old Brooklynites will hold its annual memorial tribute to the Prison Ship Martyrs. These are the sometimes forgotten sailors, marines and soldiers captured during the American Revolution and jailed aboard British prison ships anchored in the waters of Wallabout Bay. They were incarcerated in dungeon-like spaces on decrepit old sailing vessels under the most horrendous conditions.
