… in the early morning a friend and I will be traveling down to Lake Pleasant to see what is going on and although it is very unlikely that we would recognize any of the birds from last year I am rooting for the Bald Eagle fledgling pictured above. The mortality rate for first year bald eagles is a little over 50% which is better than for most raptors. This shot was taken just a couple of weeks after he left the nest … likely about 12 to 15 weeks old and he is full size already.

… lately I’ve been getting some terrific shots of crows in the neighborhood and above is another one on the backside of the tee box. Fresh and a mission to fly!Below are a couple of male Grackles that I shot down at the ponds this afternoon. Most of the other birds and ducks have already split for the summer and we’ll see them this fall as they reverse direction for the fall migration.

… going back to some of my favorites tonight. Above is a shot I took from roughly the intersect of SR 179 and Beaver Head Flat Road looking N towards the Village of Oak Creek and about 7 miles beyond that lies the city of Sedona. Red Rock Ranger Station on the right of SR 179 at the bottom of the photograph.

… in true fashion for creatures on this little planet, a couple of crows resorted to the age old method of dispute resolution by engaging in a bit of rough play … no idea what it was all about, but it went on for several minutes and I got hundreds of beautiful shots of them so engaged, on the 11th tee box. I spent about an hour and a half relaxing on the deck this afternoon and there were a plethora of birds and critters that showed up.

… I spent most of the afternoon roaming the plateau and lakes looking for birds with a friend today and while we saw a few raptors and other birds. No shots worth keeping, but on the way back we stopped at the Rainbow Trout Farm and got some great shots. As we pulled up, friends spotted a Black Hawk finishing off his dinner and I got a series of keepers. The photo above shows him finishing off the last few morsels of Rainbow Trout … then he left.
