Maricopa Police Department this afternoon hosted an informational meeting on developing neighborhood watch groups in subdivisions around the city. The meeting was initiated by some recent crime around the city, but Community Support Specialist Jim DeVenezia said the department was also due for another meeting. “With some of the latest activities, some of the shootings in particular, it was suggested to me to do a neighborhood watch update,” DeVenezia told InMaricopa.

The Pinal County Board of Supervisors hit the “paws” button Wednesday on commercial dog breeding kennel permits in Thunderbird Farms. Supervisors voted 4-1 to return special use permit requests from Abbott’s German Shepherds to the Pinal County Planning and Zoning Commission, citing new stipulations that had not been approved by the commission. The zoning board will review the issue again during a June 19 meeting. The board of supervisors will hear the requests again July 2.

It could be the end of an era for one popular ice cream brand with a presence in Maricopa. After 85 years as a West Coast frozen dessert mainstay, Thrifty Ice Cream’s future has become uncertain amid drug store Rite Aid filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this month. That plan includes selling off most of its assets, including the El Monte, Calif., Thrifty brand. Philadelphia-based Rite Aid purchased the ice cream brand in 1996 when it acquired parent company Thrifty PayLess for $2.3 billion.

Maricopa’s water utility provider is pumping more groundwater but says its “sophisticated model” has allowed it to save even more, too. Global Water Resources pumped 3.1 billion gallons of groundwater last year, according to its annual report that it presented to the Maricopa City Council last week. That’s a 300-million-gallon increase from 2022 and 400-million-gallon increase from 2021. A report on groundwater pumping was not provided in 2023.

It’s not easy finding a primary care doctor who can help you knock out that annual physical after your 9-5 job, especially if 5 p.m. means only starting your drive back to Maricopa. That’s where My Dr Now hopes to step in. The Chandler-based primary care clinic this morning hosted a grand opening at its newest location at Edison Pointe, 44360 W. Edison Road, Suite 135. This is the clinic’s third Pinal County location and its seventh outside Maricopa County.
