    METHUEN — In anticipation of new dogs brought to shelter this summer, the MSPCA-Angell is waiving fees for mature mutts at their shelters, ages one-year and older. Nine shelters, including MSPCA-Angell at Nevins Farm, 400 Broadway, are aiming to find homes for 100 dogs during the one week event beginning on Monday, June 23, and ending on June 29.

    METHUEN — Greater Lawrence Technical School Superintendent John Lavoie faced an aggressive and outraged City Council recently, as he gave a presentation on his proposed budget that will be supported by $5.8 million from the city. While Methuen’s contribution to the vocational school based in Andover is rising by roughly $700,000 next fiscal year or 13%, Lavoie told the council he had no hand in the increase as it was a result of a state formula.

    METHUEN — One week after layoff notices went out to 42 teachers and other staff members in the public school district, local officials are now saying only 12 educators will actually be losing their jobs. The city is slated to receive an additional $3 million in aid from a supplemental state budget that was passed by the Legislature on June 18 and now awaits Gov. Maura Healey’s signature, according to a joint statement from the city and school district.

    DRACUT — It is unclear, as of Friday afternoon, if a Methuen woman will face charges after a fatal crash earlier this week that claimed the life of a Lowell man.     ANDOVER — After 15 years in the leadership role and more than four decades at Greater Lawrence Technical School, Superintendent John Lavoie has announced his retirement as of June 30, 2026. Lavoie has faced pressure over the last year for a $337,000 salary he was slated to receive and other administrator's compensation at the school. He began his career with the district as early as 1973 as a carpentry instructor before leaving and then returning to the school as superintendent in 2010.
