As Juneteenth approaches, many events in the Upstate are planned to take part in and celebrate a holiday which is described by the National Museum of African American History and Culture as our country's second Independence Day. President Joe Biden designated Juneteenth a federal holiday in 2021, but the holiday has been celebrated for more than a century and a half. This year, Juneteenth will be celebrated on Thursday, June 19.

Off-duty police officer Paige Marie Newell was arrested after police said she pointed a gun at a woman and her children during a road rage incident. Newell aimed a gun at the woman's car and intentionally reversed into the victim's vehicle, a report says. The victim's children corroborated the account. Newell was released from Spartanburg County Detention Center the day after her arrest.

The Department of Motor Vehicles warned there's been a rise in scammers pretending to be workers who threaten South Carolinians with prison time if they don't pay a ticket violation. The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles said residents should be aware of scam text messages about unpaid ticket violations. The department does not send texts to collect unpaid tickets or tolls. “Don't let a fake text redirect you or your money elsewhere,” the department said in a statement.

Two people died in a plane that took off from Spartanburg Downtown Airport and crashed near the South Carolina-North Carolina state border. A plane that took off from Spartanburg County on June 14 crashed on the other side of the North Carolina border while in route to Myrtle Beach, according to FAA flight records. The two people who died in the crash haven't been identified.
