Paid parking in Southport could generate up to $1 million per year in revenue for the city, but a proposal presented June 2 to aldermen was met with mixed reactions. Otto Connect, which manages paid parking for Oak Island, Holden Beach, Ocean Isle Beach and Sunset Beach, presented aldermen with a plan to implement paid parking for approximately 900 spaces in the downtown Southport area and along North Howe Street.

During his Memorial Day address Monday at Boiling Spring Lakes, retired Chief Petty Officer Brian Craig paid tribute to the 1.3 million military members who paid the price to ensure that America’s way of life endures. Craig told those who gathered at VFW Post 10400, where he is a past commander, that he wanted to reflect on veterans who influenced him greatly. “There are many, but I would like to tell you about two of them,” he said.

Trustees were able to see firsthand some areas of the Brunswick Community College Southport Center that are slated for renovation and completion when they toured the building on May 15. Center Director Barbara McFall provided board members with an unclose view of how the building on North Lord Street provides studio-based courses in heritage arts and crafts. Their tour included a look inside shop classrooms where students are turning pieces of wood and metal into art and everyday household items.

Dosher Memorial Hospital trustees have given their support to a $500,000 capital campaign to help purchase new mammography equipment for the hospital that can better detect breast cancer. “Our board would love to join with you,” said trustees chair Robert Howard. “You have our commitment.”Trustees voted unanimously to endorse the fundraiser. Members of the Dosher Memorial Hospital Foundation gave trustees an overview of the capital campaign.

Dosher Memorial Hospital’s emergency department has been extremely busy treating patients with the flu and other respiratory illnesses. The good news is flu cases peaked last month and are trending downward during early March, according to state statistics. Dosher Chief Nursing Officer Jill Ward told hospital trustees during their meeting Feb. 24 that in February the staff faced an extremely full emergency room.
