Local industry sponsors CHS students in national competition

ROGERSVILLE — The Hawkins County Board of Education recognized a local industry, Mahle, for sponsoring two students to attend the national Technology Student Association competition in Orlando this summer. In March, several Cherokee High School Technology Student Association members attended the 2024 Tennessee TSA State Leadership Conference in Chattanooga. Of those students, several placed, including Fynn Vedder and Noah Lawson, who took first in Technology Problem Solving.
Hawkins County School Board member donates her late father’s car to the CTE department

ROGERSVILLE — The Hawkins County Board of Education recently approved a donation by one of its members, who wanted to honor her late father by giving his car to the district’s Career and Technical Education department. Hawkins County BOE Vice-Chairman and District Six Representative Debbie Shedden talked to the board about her late father, Leon Gladson. She said her father had a hard life growing up. “He grew up in Morresburg and attended Mooresburg School,” Shedden said.
Mount Carmel to host Nerf war

MOUNT CARMEL — The Town of Mount Carmel will host its annual Nerf War event later this month. The event will take place at the city park from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on May 25. The event offers an exciting day of action for kids and adults. It will feature a Nerf game of team battles and capture the flag. In addition to the Nerf War, a vendor will be present to sell refreshments. Participants are required to bring their own Nerf guns, but not darts, because they will be provided.
Holston Army Ammunition Plant plans community meeting

KINGSPORT — The Holston Army Ammunition Plant will host a community meeting to give the public a chance to learn more about the HSAAP and its environmental efforts. The meeting will be held on May 8 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Eastern Tennessee State University's Allendale Campus in Room 236. The plant is a government-owned and contractor-operated installation run by BAE Systems. The HSAAP, a subordinate of the Joint Munitions Command, synthesizes and manufactures explosives for the US Army.

Volunteer High School hosts Prom Promise to promote safe driving

CHURCH HILL — Volunteer High School hosted a Prom Promise event on Wednesday morning, which included a simulated car accident to show students the impact of unsafe driving practices. The simulation took place in front of the school. It required the participation of several community organizations, such as local firefighters, Hawkins County Emergency Medical Services and Hawkins County Rescue Squad. Career and Technical Education students from several programs also participated in the event.

Hawkins County BOE votes to renew director’s contract

ROGERSVILLE— The Hawkins County Board of Education voted to renew the Director of Schools contract after adding a pay raise. The BOE met on Monday to review the new draft of Director of Schools Matt Hixson’s contract. The district’s attorney recommended slight changes to keep it current with new laws. They also discussed the director’s salary range, currently $125,000.
