LYNCHBURG, Va. ( WFXR) - The Lynchburg Commonwealth's Attorney announced a man has been found guilty and sentenced to 55 years in prison for the murder of 19-year-old Makayvia Cabell in 2024. Commonwealth's Attorney, Beth Harrison, said that on Wednesday, June 18, 22-year-old Keon Jamir Palmer was sentenced to 75 years with 23 years suspended for first-degree murder after being found guilty during a three-day trial in February 2025.

WINTER GREEN, Va. ( WFXR) - Wintergreen Fire & Rescue was assisted by numerous other units at a lumber mill fire in southern Nelson County on June 17. Fire officials said crews, including Amherst and Albemarle, were dispatched around 5:55 a.m. after a fire alarm was received at the Turman lumber yard on Thomas Nelson Highway. Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire coming from the middle of the large commercial building.

The sheriff said deputies responded to the Dollar General on Greensboro Road around 6:10 p.m. on Monday after reports of a bomb threat. Upon arrival, all patrons and staff were immediately evacuated from the store.

( WFXR) - LPD said officers were actively patrolling the area near 13th Street and Commerce Street after reports of a large crowd gathered near the El Gordo Food Truck during the early morning hours on Sunday. According to police, officers then heard multiple gunshots at the 1300 block of Main Street and immediately responded.

ROANOKE, Va. ( WFXR) - Roanoke Police are actively searching for a missing woman from Roanoke. RPD said that 40-year-old Meagan Martin was reported missing around 2 p.m. on Monday, June 16. A well-being check was attempted by officers at her home on the 1400 block of Downing Street NW; however, there was no response. Family members told police the last time they had spoken with Martin was on Saturday, June 14.

According to the sheriff, an investigation was started into Bobby Lee Kelley III of Sumter, South Carolina, who was previously designated as a registered sex offender.
