Iran has issued fresh warnings of more strikes to come as its capital came under direct Israeli fire on Tuesday evening, with at least 1,200 Australians in both countries awaiting news of repatriation to safety. There were further strikes across the Iranian capital late on Tuesday, marking the fifth day of intense fighting between the two countries. A senior Iranian military figure has warned citizens in Tel Aviv and Haifa to "evacuate as soon as possible". "Punitive operations will be carried out soon," Iran's armed forces chief of staff Abdolrahim Mousavi said in a TV statement. "Residents of the occupied territories, especially Tel Aviv and Haifa, are strongly urged to leave these areas for the sake of their lives," he said.

An Iranian state television broadcast has been bombed live on air as Israel and Iran stepped up missile attacks against each other for the fourth straight day. Explosions were seen ringing out in the Iranian capital of Tehran, where residents could be seen joining huge queues of traffic trying to leave on Monday. At least 224 people had been killed in Iran by Israeli strikes between Friday and Sunday, amid reports Iran had reached out to the US to indicate its desire for a ceasefire.
