A US court has deemed Donald Trump's "liberation day" tariffs illegal, in a significant setback to the president's attempts to reorder global trade. Wall Street posted gains on Thursday following the ruling, which is already being appealed by the Trump administration. The lawsuit was filed by a group of small businesses, including wine wholesaler VOS Selections, whose owner has said the tariffs could torpedo the company.

A man has been detained after a car hit pedestrians in the UK city of Liverpool during celebrations over the local football club's Premier League victory. In a statement, Merseyside Police said they were "currently dealing with reports of a road traffic collision in Liverpool city centre". "We were contacted at just after 6pm today, Monday 26 May, following reports a car had been in collision with a number of pedestrians on Water Street. "The car stopped at the scene and a male has been detained.

The Russian president has confirmed a group of senior diplomats and defence officials will be in Moscow's delegation, but his own name was not on the list.
