In the upcoming election, Central Oregon Coast Fire and Rescue is asking voters to approve the same levy increase that was rejected last November. This time around, four jobs are on the line. Chief Jamie Mason said the fire district that protects Waldport, Tidewater and the Five Rivers area has, for years, been using financial reserves to cover payroll and expenses. And that money is running out.

For the first time in 20 years, the Lowell Rural Fire Protection District is asking taxpayers to approve an operational levy to cover increased costs of firefighting. The fire district serves the City of Lowell and the community of Fall Creek, with around 2,650 residents in its boundaries. Fire Chief Lon Dragt said if Measure 20-370 on the May ballot is approved, it will help pay for station and equipment maintenance, as costs for just about everything are up.

Oregon’s Department of Emergency Management says the Trump administration’s decision to abruptly cancel a hazard mitigation grant program will “significantly impact communities” across the state. OEM said the loss of the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities, or BRIC program, will seriously impede Oregon’s ability to prepare for disasters.

And the loss of federal funds meant to repair its failing drinking water system has only exacerbated the situation.

New research from the University of Oregon reveals that a person’s political beliefs affect the trust they have in their own doctors and health care providers. During the COVID-19 pandemic, UO political scientist Neil O’Brian started thinking about health and politics. Witnessing the partisan response to masking and vaccines, he wondered just how far distrust in medicine might extend? O’Brian conducted surveys, randomly sampling nearly 2,000 people.
