A Charleston-based nonprofit, The Sustainability Institute, is lead plaintiff in a national lawsuit challenging the Trump Administration's freeze of federal funding. The Southern Environmental Law Center and Public Rights Project filed the lawsuit in federal court on March 19. SELC is representing 11 nonprofit organizations across the country, and the Public Right Project is representing six U.S. cities.

A few years ago, Gloria Daniels didn’t know what to do. She has lived in her North Charleston home since 1997. Her energy use was modest, she said. She kept the house at the recommended 68 degrees in the winter and roughly 70 degrees in the summer. When she did, she knew her Dominion energy bills would spike, costing her up to $400 a month — unaffordable on her fixed income, Daniels said. “(When) there were more of us living in the house, I expected it to be like that,” she said.
