The man charged with manslaughter of his ex-girlfriend before the case was later dropped allegedly told a witness he accidentally tripped on the stairs causing the gun to go off, a court has heard. The same witness also told police that as the man’s mother went to dial triple-0, he told her in a state of panic “no, don’t call yet, wait”.

The cyclist accused of keying parked cars in four Brisbane suburbs across eight months has hidden inside court for four hours before sprinting from the building in an attempt to avoid the media. The identity of the accused can now be revealed as 51-year-old Fortitude Valley resident John Anthony Lyons, after he fronted court for the first time on Wednesday.

Authorities in Queensland were gearing up for the possibility of a long weekend of weather extremes across the state as Tropical Cyclone Kirrily barrelled toward the coast on Thursday. The Queensland-South Australia border could see maximum temperatures exceeding 50C, with the potential to break the state’s record high of 49.5C, reached at Birdsville in 1972. With the system’s southerly trajectory looking less likely after landfall, southern Queensland would face scorching temperatures and storms.

Emergency crews are being rushed from interstate to aid in the mammoth recovery of the deadly Christmas storms after the SES received a record number of calls for assistance. Thousands of homes are expected to be without power for days and large areas are without phone service amid a mammoth recovery effort, with people in some of the worst-hit areas still waiting for help two days after the destructive storms.
