    On Thursday night, I was at Salisbury Playhouse where comedian Josh Widdicombe was appearing as part of this year’s festival. Then on Friday, I hotfooted it to East London’s Vortex Jazz Club to watch the brilliant jazz guitarist Tom Ollendorff. The Josh Widdicombe gig was billed as a ‘Work in Progress’ in advance of his forthcoming national tour. He’s not the first comedian to visit Salisbury in this warm-up guise: Michael McIntyre has performed similar nights before.

    In the memoir, Raynor tells the tale of her and husband Moth walking the South West Coast Path. The film stars Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs, recounting the story of overcoming personal difficulties and finding solace in nature along the way. I haven’t seen the film yet myself, but did the next best thing – or possibly the better thing – by spending the weekend with a group of friends walking a section of the path.

    As the crowds followed their maps to zig-zag back and forth across the cathedral grounds, it was easy to overlook a regular resident, who has made it her home since 1981. Elisabeth Frink’s remarkable Walking Madonna statue was originally meant to be a temporary exhibit but over the last few decades has become a welcome, permanent fixture. Its familiarity means it is easy to overlook, but it is a wonderful work of art – combining strength and meaning in its simplicity and slightness.

The result was that thirteen Tory seats where the bakery was ‘breaded’ in switched to the Lib Dems.
