    After 43 years in prison, a woman accused of the 1980 killing of a St. Joseph woman was freed from prison. The Missouri Department of Corrections says Sandra Hemme was released after an appeals court ruled last week that she be immediately released. Hemme, filed a Habeas Corpus suit in February of 2023 against the prison seeking release. Hemme has been serving her sentence at the Chillicothe Correction Center.

Architect Hoefer Welker will provide drawings and models of the proposed facility. The budget for the building is $7.2 million. The City is working on outside funding for some items, including applying for grants and possible foundation funding.

    A Chillicothe man was arrested by Chillicothe Police officers Thursday evening. Forty-eight-year-old Jason Lee Schowengerdt was booked into the Caldwell County Detention Center for alleged assault and harassment. He remains in custody with no bond allowed.

    An electrical issue at the Chillicothe Municipal Utilities Substation at Ryan and Brunswick early this (Friday) morning was visible from quite a distance. Electric Services Superintendent Colton Reeter says there was an issue at about 3:25 am that caused the substation to trip and shut down the power. That issue caused an electrical arc that was visible as a bright glow or flash that was reported seen from as far away as Wheeling. Power was restored after about an hour and twenty minutes.
