Hemme Released From Prison After Court Approves Appeal

After 43 years in prison, a woman accused of the 1980 killing of a St. Joseph woman was freed from prison. The Missouri Department of Corrections says Sandra Hemme was released after an appeals court ruled last week that she be immediately released. Hemme, filed a Habeas Corpus suit in February of 2023 against the prison seeking release. Hemme has been serving her sentence at the Chillicothe Correction Center.
Chillicothe City Council Meeting Is Monday

Chillicothe City Council will consider the revisions to the Animal ordinance and discuss the new Police Facility as part of their agenda on Monday. The meeting begins at 5:30 pm at Chillicothe City Hall. The agenda begins with the finances.
Chillicothe Police Facility Discussions

Discussions with the architect about the new Chillicothe Police Facility are part of the Chillicothe City Council agenda for Monday. The council members will meet at 5:30 pm at City Hall. Architect Hoefer Welker will provide drawings and models of the proposed facility. The budget for the building is $7.2 million. The City is working on outside funding for some items, including applying for grants and possible foundation funding.

A Chillicothe man was arrested by Chillicothe Police officers Thursday evening. Forty-eight-year-old Jason Lee Schowengerdt was booked into the Caldwell County Detention Center for alleged assault and harassment. He remains in custody with no bond allowed.
CMU Substation Failure Visible From Near Wheeling

An electrical issue at the Chillicothe Municipal Utilities Substation at Ryan and Brunswick early this (Friday) morning was visible from quite a distance. Electric Services Superintendent Colton Reeter says there was an issue at about 3:25 am that caused the substation to trip and shut down the power. That issue caused an electrical arc that was visible as a bright glow or flash that was reported seen from as far away as Wheeling. Power was restored after about an hour and twenty minutes.

Annual Kid's Fishing Derby

The annual North Missouri Sportsman’s Alliance Kid’s Fishing Derby is on June 1st. The event will be held at the large pond on the west side of the Chillicothe Baptist Home. North Missouri Sportsman’s Alliance and Missouri Department of Conservation are hosting the event that includes a couple of firsts.
Chillicothe Police Report for Thursday

Eighty-three calls for service were handled by the Chillicothe Police Department Thursday. Some of the calls include:4:14 AM Officers responded to the 2600 block of Fair Street for a violent elderly male. The male was found to be in need of assistance and was transported for medical treatment. 11:26 AM Officers assisted in traffic control for a stranded semi in the area of Missouri Ave and 10th Street. 2:53 PM Officers responded to Clay and Washington to arrest a man for a previous assault charge.
Chillicothe Elementary School - Sensory Room

A sensory room at Chillicothe Elementary School opened this year to help children who are on the spectrum. Special Services Director Emily Schmidt says the room was made possible with the assistance of Chillicothe’s Rotary Club. Carroll County Route 41 Resurfacing

A resurfacing project on Missouri Route 41 in Carroll County near De Witt begins on Saturday. Contractor Capital Paving and Construction will narrow Route 41 to one lane with flaggers directing motorists through the work zone. A 10-foot width restriction will be in place. Crews expect to complete the paving on Monday. Shoulder rock and pavement markings will follow for all routes.
