A delegation from the county town is travelling over to the French town it is twinned with this week and there are high hopes it will 'reinvigorate' an already strong bond and relationship. A judge has directed that a probation report be compiled on a carer who visited the home of an 87-year-old man in the Midlands to look after him and instead stole €100 from his wallet. Mikhail Sergeevich (30) of Derawley, Drumlish, Longford pleaded guilty at Longford District Court to the theft offence at Currygrane, Ballinalee on October 8, 2024. Sergeant Mark Mahon said the defendant was employed as a full-time carer by the subcontractor from a private company through the HSE.

A drunk and abusive county Longford man who was arrested after he told Gardaí to 'f**k off' has been convicted and fined. Anthony Mannion of Clygeen, Legan pleaded guilty at Longford District Court to two public order breaches at Rath Reagh, Smithfield, Legan on May 16, 2025. The defendant was charged with section 4 of the Public Order Act namely being intoxicated to such an extent as would give rise to a reasonable apprehension that he might endanger himself or others.

Longford County Council has said it is pleased to announce the start of a new biodiversity research project focusing on County Longford hedgerows, the first such survey to take place since 2006. This research project will assess the condition of important wildlife habitat and help to better understand the extent and condition of the county’s hedgerows from biodiversity, historical and cultural perspectives. The research will inform future conservation priorities.
