A game that at half-time promised so much more ended up running away on Mayo, who commenced their LGFA All-Ireland Championship with a six points defeat at the hands of the defending champions on Saturday afternoon. Kerry looked as though they might be in a spot of bother when leading by just the one point after the opening thirty minutes, considering Mayo had a significant breeze in their favour from thereon.

Roscommon had just scored their first point in fifteen minutes when Shane Boland stood over a Mayo free, the sliotar placed to the right of centre about 45-metres out from the Davin End goal. It was the 70th minute of the match and to score would give Mayo a three points advantage.

He isn’t the first man to have resorted to prayer on matters Mayo GAA. His journey west to another Sorrowful Mystery had transported the GAA president back to his boyhood and to the Burns’ family’s annual Easter pilgrimage to Knock. He recalled the three rosaries that had to be said along the way. You’d wonder why just the one this time then.
