Abilene voters are having their say Saturday on two City Council races and a $20 million bond measure to improve the Abilene Regional Airport. Unofficial early voting results from Taylor County election officials show that incumbent Kyle McAlister is leading the way with just over 50 percent of the vote in the Place 5 races, and incumbent Travis Craver is outpacing his challenger.

Polls will be open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday for in-person Election Day voting in San Angelo. Residents will vote to choose a new mayor and three City Council members. They will also have their say on a proposed bond issue for San Angelo Coliseum improvements, and San Angelo ISD has put a bond before voters for school and security improvements. While certain property owners would not see a hike in their tax bills if voters approve the coliseum and school bonds, others can expect to see an increase.

After rabies exposures as recently as Friday, San Angelo Animal Services officials warned residents not to touch or handle bats. In one recent incident, a child handled a dead bat, officials said Friday in a Facebook post. "Proper medical, health and safety protocol for those affected were enforced and followed," officials said. On Friday, a woman and her child petted a grounded bat infected with rabies, and protocols were followed again to deal with the situation, officials said.

A man has been indicted on allegations he caused the death of Brayden Patrick Shockley, 30, in a motorcycle street race in Abilene, according to court documents. A Taylor County grand jury handed down an indictment Thursday against Malik William Winfield of Abilene for a charge of racing on highway causing death, court records show. He was charged in connection with a crash involving three motorcycles Feb. 20, 2024, near the 4300 block of Pine Street.

The city of Abilene has extended how long it will be able to forgo responding to citizens' requests for public records. The city filed a notice to lengthen its catastrophe status through May 5 for the cyber attack detected April 18, according to a state database and city officials. Federal authorities are investigating the cyber attack. Filing an initial catastrophe notice allows the city to forego responding to citizens' open records requests for seven days in a row, according to state law.
