THE DALLES — A Rowena Fire community meeting will be held tonight, Friday, June 13 beginning at 7 p.m. at The Dalles High School’s auditorium, 200 E. 10th St.The meeting will be recorded and posted on YouTube and Facebook after the event. The meeting is hosted by Wasco County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon Department of Forestry, and the Oregon State Fire Marshall.

I went back to school recently. Hood River Valley High School (HRVHS) English teacher Mandy Webster invited me, Sports Editor Noah Noteboom and Owner/Publisher Chelsea Marr to visit her writing 122 and senior English classes to talk about journalism, bias, the importance of local news, and the issues around AI — or artificial intelligence. Since the newspaper is my favorite topic, I jumped at the chance. I was alone on the first day and joined by Noah and Chelsea on the second.

By Trisha WalkerColumbia Gorge NewsHOOD RIVER — It was the last school board meeting for Hood River County School District (HRCSD) student envoys and Hood River Valley High School (HRVHS) seniors Grace Rowan, ASB president, and Lana Salman, ASB vice president, on May 28. The pair was set to graduate with the rest of the class of 2025 on June 6. Rowan introduced incoming ASB President Felipe Mendes and Vice President Rune Baumhackl, who will serve as student envoys next year.

By Trisha WalkerColumbia Gorge NewsHOOD RIVER — The May 27 Hood River City Council meeting began with a moment of silence for former Hood River Mayor Linda Rouches, 2005-2008, who had recently passed away. Hood River County District Attorney (DA) Matthew Ellis later provided an overview of his department and the services it provides. Ellis most recently served as Wasco County DA and was sworn in as Hood River’s in January. He told councilors the county’s data dashboard is now live.
