At Minibar in Penn Quarter, you’re treated like some monarch who couldn't possibly push in their own leather chair. The tasting menu won't be cheap, but the polished service and inventive food warrant the $325 price tag. You'll sit at a communal kitchen table with 11 other people and watch the chefs plate elaborate little waffles with ribeye. They might even hand-feed you a sesame tart wafting with liquid nitrogen.

There are a few reasons to hit this all-day American restaurant and cafe in Navy Yard, like their homemade cold brew and buttery croissants. But it’s the scallion-pancake egg sandwich that will turn anyone (including tourists here for more than a day) into a regular. Choosing Rania for date night will make you look like you know your stuff. The lights are low, Indian jazz music plays, the food is special enough to talk about for months after the meal—and it won't feel overpriced. The $90 pre-fixe menu rotates seasonally, with dishes like a creamy pork loin vindaloo with pieces of crunchy belly, or spicy shrimp koliwada with sweet pepper chutney we scrape up until it’s gone.

I watched Top Gun for the first time today. It reminded me of how much I love Val Kilmer. Awful to have lost him in the same day. RIP.
