Shortly after taking office in 2022, Knox County Trustee Justin Biggs signed up his office to pay $397,968 over five years for six large, four-wheel drive pickup trucks for employees. The vehicles are bigger and nicer than those leased by other county offices. There's more of them and they cost more: $200,000 above what the trustee's office would have paid for vehicles typically used by other county offices.

The Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury has been investigating the Knox County Trustee's Office and Trustee Justin Biggs. Biggs and members of the trustee’s office billed the county for swanky hotel stays well over recommended travel rates. Biggs' equipped his staff with six Chevrolet 1500 pickup trucks, which were pricey and largely unnecessary. The trucks are sometimes used for personal use, which is against county policy.

The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals denied the city’s request to rehear their February decision, which said they could sue the city for officers failing to provide urgent care to Anthony Thompson Jr.The decision is significant. Federal courts rarely rule that officers are not covered by qualified immunity. The case is expected to go to trial unless the city files an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court or the two parties settle, neither of which is expected.

Since March 19 a sign on the door provides no information: “APPOINTMENTS CANCELED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE” in English and Spanish. The office closure matters because these appointments are mandatory and failure to appear at them can lead to consequences up to deportation. People are showing up, but don't know what to do when the office is closed. Some take selfies in front of the door, showing the cancellation sign as proof they were there.

For four straight weeks, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in West Knoxville has been closed for routine check-ins, worrying and confusing members of East Tennessee’s immigrant community. The closed doors have caused heightened levels of anxiety for immigrants at a time when shifting federal policies have sowed confusion. Since March 19, one sign on the door provides scant information: “APPOINTMENTS CANCELED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE” in English and Spanish. Other signs are no help.

New. The city of Knoxville is likely headed to a civil trial over the @Knoxville_PD shooting death of 17-year-old Anthony Thompson Jr. The 6th Circuit, one of the most conservative appellate courts in the country, declined to review it further. https://t.co/rUTTCAdwft

That the @ICEgov office here is closed to check-ins is only heightening the anxiety people are feeling. In February 3 people were arrested - with no criminal charges - at their assigned check-in time. https://t.co/Kilou8Yzua
