The sound of cicadas humming gives way to high-pitched squeaking. The sky darkens. Some people settle into folding chairs and turn their heads to the sky as little black blobs shoot out of a storm drain, one by one at first, then in droves. On one side of the drain a sign says “No Trespassing” and on the other side there’s a sign with facts about Mexican free-tailed bats. The bats are visitors to Phoenix for the summertime, the season bat babies are born.

Cardinals President Bill DeWitt III is talking about a massive update of Busch Stadium and considering asking taxpayers to pay. ("Busch Stadium needs renovations. Should St. Louis taxpayers kick in?," May 6.)He said that we will benefit, but he doesn't mention profit sharing. Usually investors get a guaranteed payback. This sounds like a terrible business deal for over-burdened taxpayers who have not recovered from recent inflation which increased prices for everything.

Regarding Aisha Sultan's column "What colleges get wrong about student protests" (May 5): She omits several facts. In comparing these protests with the anti-Vietnam protests of the 1960s, she makes no mention of the horrendous attack of Oct. 7 on Israeli civilians nor the antisemitic harassment of Jewish students and faculty. In America we have the right to express our opinions as well as peacefully protest, but in order to have rational discussion, all facts must be considered. Tom GilliamBallwin

Campus protests shouldn't ruin college experience for othersAs a parent of a graduating student at Washington University in St. Louis, I am addressing the organizers of the recent protests on campus. I understand and believe in your right to protest and have your voices heard on these issues. ("Washington University faculty placed on leave, students ‘houseless’ after Gaza protest," April 30.)My request is that you do not disturb my daughter's ability to enjoy this major milestone in her life.
