CRETE, Neb. (KLKN) — A beloved Crete restaurant is getting back on its feet after an overnight fire Wednesday. The damage is forcing Old Main Bar and Grill to shut down for now. “The plans definitely are to open again,” manager Jess Thatcher said. “Whether it’s now, after the investigations conclude, or whether it’s next year, I’m not sure.”Thatcher said she was looking at security camera video of the restaurant when she noticed it was blurry and cloudy.
‘It’s really upsetting’: Bike thieves on the prowl in Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Darin Byrnes is a recent victim of a bicycle thief in the Near South neighborhood. His camera caught a man going into his backyard and walking away with his bike. And he’s not alone. Lincoln Police data show the number of bike thefts goes up in the spring and summer. In January and February, nine bikes were stolen each month. In May, 23 were stolen, and 32 were stolen in June. Byrnes said people often walk by the area and peer over his fence.
Latino organizations in Nebraska form alliance after Crete shooting

CRETE, Neb. (KLKN) — Latino organizations are coming together to support the victims of last month’s mass shooting in Crete. The Nebraska chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens formed the Latino Alliance to address the shooting and other issues facing Latinos in the state. “The Latino Alliance is really uniting local organizations to help this family, and we have also started to organize donations for the family,” said Juan Carlos Garcia, LULAC of Nebraska’s chief of staff.

(KLKN) — A Lincoln father is raising concerns about the conditions of the city’s baseball fields. “I’m not asking for a $1o million baseball complex by any means,” Korey Reiman said. “It’s just basic upgrades so that meaningful baseball games can be played with our kids.”Reiman, a father of two, said the infield dirt at Jensen and at Standing Bear parks can be dangerous. “This infield is rock hard,” he said.

Gregg Nelson, the owner of two downtown restaurants – Squire Ward’s and Rue 6 – said today is the biggest day for the local economy with thousands of people shopping and eating local. “The town is full, everybody is happy,” Nelson said.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Nebraskans are likely to vote on abortion in November after two petitions on opposite sides of the issue turned in far more signatures than required. Four petitions on this issue were circulating in the state, but only two appear to be moving forward. Wednesday was the deadline for organizers to submit signatures. In Nebraska, abortion is banned after 12 weeks, with exceptions for sexual assault, incest and medical emergency.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — An immigrant family is working to fill the need for child care in Lincoln. Melba Al-Sayagh is starting a day care with her niece and daughters. They will call it Estrellitas, which means little stars. Al-Sayagh said this is a dream that she had held close to her heart for decades. She said she wants to help other mothers. “We as a woman, we need to go out and make a living, bring money to the house,” she said.
'One of us was affected': Crete soccer team raises donations for shooting victims

CRETE, Neb. (KLKN) — A team from Crete High School is bringing some hope to the people impacted by the mass shooting in the small Nebraska town. The boys soccer team is collecting donations that it will deliver to the family this week. Head coach Derek Spence said this tragedy has hit them closely. “One of us was affected,” he said. “So we came together as a family again and asked the community to help out.” The son of the victims played on the team before graduating in May.
Nebraskans could decide on paid sick leave this November

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Paid sick leave for Nebraskans is one step closer to being on the ballot this November. Supporters of the initiative turned in 138,000 signatures Thursday to the Secretary of State’s Office. If at least about 86,000 of those signatures are valid, voters will get to decide the issue. Rosa Pinto was one of those submitting signatures. She said she was working at a manufacturing plant when she got the call that no mother wants to hear.
Thieves ransack Hickman auto dealership but don't steal classic cars

HICKMAN, Neb. (KLKN) — A Hickman business owner is on the lookout for whoever broke into his car dealership. PJ Shaw owns Air Cowboy Collectible Cars. He said someone broke the windows to get in during Father’s Day weekend. They stole most of the sales records, Shaw said. “Then they took the keys, took all the titles and the current sale jackets that we have,” he said. Surprisingly, he said, they didn’t steal any of the classic cars. “I felt violated, you know,” Shaw said.
