Hunter Bledsoe is a sophomore at Hockinson High School in Brush Prairie, Washington. He’s also our KXL EVERDAY HERO for his effort to feed the needy in his community. He organizes a food drive every year, and his goal for 2024 is 2500 food items. Last year he gathered 1900. He’s started a GO FUND ME to raise money to buy food because he says often people donate things that are expired, or close to expiring.

Local filmmaker Dave Paull has a way with words. He also has a way with people, and was able to bring out the human and theatrical side of the late actor Yaphet Kotto. He interviewed him about his career on stage, in films and on television before his death and has now won an award for Best Documentary Interview at Newsfest International Film Festival.

Rose City Rabbit Rescue hops in to help!Volunteers help find the bunnies, and then they are spayed and neutered, brought back to good health if necessary, and adopted out to people who will give thema forever home. David Kaulitz opened up Vault 31 in Vancouver a few years back. He and his sister Sarah Ahlvers were both in the tech field locally and both had dreamsof breaking into the food business. David went first, and during the pandemic Sarah lost her job so she started selling cookies out of Vault 31. It was so successfulthat she opened up a cookie cart, which is in the Cart Blocks in downtown Portland. It’s got a super creative name: Cookie McCakeFace.

We have another $1000 winner for Positively Portland from Dick Hannah Believe in Nice. Veterans Back 40 Adventure is run by Jonathan Williams, an instructor at Portland Community College. It works to acclimate service members back into private life, and to bring awareness to the high rate of veteran and active-duty military suicides.

Firefighters From Down Under Arrive in the Northwest

Firefighters from Down Under are here in the Northwest to lend a hand. 65 firefighters from Australia and New Zealand have been assigned to fires in the Willamette National Forest and also the Pioneer Fire in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. Mutual wildland fire assistance between the U.S. and these countries goes back more than 20 years.

(Portland, OR) – A group of kids from the Cascade Pacific Council of Scouting America have gotten a National Medal of Merit for jumping in and putting out a fire on a boat near the San Juan Islands. They’re part of the Cascade Pacific Council of Scouting America and were honored recently by the organization. The Sea Scouts were on the first day afloat to the San Juan Islands when they heard a distress call over the radio.
