The Hamblen County Commission Committees discussed the “B” word Monday night, budget that is. The Commission discussed, for the first time this season, the fiscal year 2026 budget. Budget Committee Chairman Rodney Long addressed the commission as the meeting started. “These are trying times,” Long said. “Remember, tonight, we’re not setting a budget.

At Monday’s monthly meeting of the Hamblen County Commission’s Committees, Jaron Dowalter of BurWil Construction provided an update on the soon-to-be completed Justice Center. Dowalter said that as of last week, all paving has been completed at the center. The parking lots will be striped on Thursday, weather permitting. In showing updated photos of the complex, Dowalter said that the grass is growing in the places where it had been sown.

One of Hawkins County’s locally-owned banks announced Thursday its intentions to merge with a Virginia-based bank. Miners and Merchants Bancorp, parent company of TruPoint Bank, located in Grundy, Virginia, and First Community Corporation, parent company of First Community Bank of East Tennessee, located in Rogersville, jointly announced the signing of a definite merger agreement whereby Miners and Merchants will acquire First Community and FCB.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation announced this week that for the first time in history, the state’s annual budget includes additional dedicated, recurring General Fund dollars for transportation. As part of this 10-year-plan, part of the recurring money going into the road fund will come from sales of tires. “Tire sales (was selected) because transportation costs keep going up,” State Sen. Steve Southerland (R-Morristown) said. “There are thousands of projects that need to be done.

Time is approaching to have a “berry” good time. The 19th Annual WCRK-FM/WMTN Country Legends Strawberry Festival comes up Saturday, May 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the WCRK/WMTN studios, located at 510 West Economy Road in Morristown, across from Manley Elementary School and half a mile behind Rural King off West Andrew Johnson Highway. This year’s festival marks the biggest spring event in the Lakeway Area that celebrates the community.
